High school students hunting particles at the Large Hadron Collider
International Masterclasses raise up young investigators

Hamburg, 25 February 2013 - In the coming days, research institutes around
the world will open their doors and invite high school students to become
particle physicists for one day. More than 10,000 students will
participate in the International Masterclasses and analyze real data from
the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the new and powerful particle accelerator
at CERN, near Geneva, Switzerland. International Masterclasses will take
place from February 26 to March 22, 2013 in 37 countries worldwide. Both
DESY locations, in Hamburg and in Zeuthen near Berlin, take part in the
programme.

Physicists use the LHC to study the smallest known particles--the
fundamental building blocks of all things. It will revolutionize our
understanding of nature, from the minuscule world deep within atoms to the
vastness of the universe. Results of the experiments are followed with
great interest, not only by physicists but also by the general public.
International Masterclasses allow students to experience this research at
close range. The basic idea of the annual program is to let students work
as much as possible like real scientists. "International Hands-on Particle
Physics Masterclasses are a unique opportunity for students to work
elbow-to-elbow with scientists and get a taste of how modern research in
physics works," says Michael Kobel, physics professor from Technical
University Dresden. For the first time, students will work with data
including real Higgs candidates--the particle whose potential discovery
was announced at CERN last summer.

Scientists at about 160 universities and laboratories in 37 countries will
host these international student research days at their home institutions.
New participants in the program come from the Middle East (Cyprus, Egypt,
Palestinian Authority, and Turkey) as well as from Romania and Australia.
The worldwide participation reflects the international collaboration in
particle physics. Students can experience this international aspect in a
videoconference concluding their research day. In a video linkup with
students in other countries and CERN or Fermilab in Batavia, Illinois,
U.S. participants present their findings--just like actual particle
physicists do in international collaborations. DESY is participating in
the programme from 14 March until 19 March. Together, both DESY locations
at Hamburg and Zeuthen near Berlin offer around 90 high school students
and 30 teachers the possibility to take part in the International
Masterclasses, which are in Berlin jointly organised with Humboldt
University.

"The fundamental questions addressed by particle physics fascinate many,
and especially young people, and motivate them to pursue a scientific
career," said DESY particle physics director Professor Joachim Mnich.
"This way, projects like the Masterclasses help to secure Germany's future
as a high-tech country."

In the masterclass, students are allowed to gain insight into the
international organization of modern research in an authentic environment;
at the same time, they learn about the world of subatomic particles
through easy-to-understand presentations by physicists who are themselves
involved in particle physics research and through actual work with data.
Participants will examine the products of collisions of elementary
particles traveling at close to the speed of light, racing through a
27-kilometer-circumference accelerator. "Students can work on real data
from the LHC, collected just few months ago," Michael Kobel emphasizes.
Three experiments--ATLAS, CMS, and ALICE--have made data available for
educational use within the program. For example, students can rediscover
the Z boson or the structure of the proton, or reconstruct �strange
particles.� They can even hunt for the Higgs boson, which fascinates not
only scientists.

International Masterclasses are led by Technical University Dresden and
QuarkNet in the U.S., in close cooperation with the International Particle
Physics Outreach Group (IPPOG). IPPOG is an independent group of outreach
representatives from countries involved in the research at CERN and of the
research laboratories CERN and DESY. The committee�s group�s goal is to
make particle physics more accessible to the public.

centre and one of the leading in the world. The DESY institutes in Hamburg
and Zeuthen near Berlin develop, build and operate large particle
accelerators to investigate the structure of matter. DESY conducts

Отнюдь... такова эпоха!
Нужно шоу, а не объективное достижение...
Вспомнился что-то путанно бормочущий Рац про достижения
ОЭЗ... Не за что зацепиться уху.. Но вот образ, который он начал
впаривать "цепь, которая рвется в слабом слабом звене"...
Где-то было.. Ах, да! Сабое слабое звено в цепи империалистических держав - будущая РФия...
Она и лопнула... Вот незадача!...

Образы, мироощущения, повадки наших партайгеноссе оттуда...
И изложение науки на языке понятном не детям, а начальству.. тоже оттуда...

ну наверное Вы были такая умная, что и так всё знали и учебники Вам не нужны были, раз Вы так рассуждаете! помимо учебников должен быть преподаватель такой, чтобы мог материал донести так, что бы ученики поняли и им было интересно

Совковые школьные учебники не всегда были плохие, а были и получше, чем современные.

Еще хочу написать про рабсилу из студентов МУПОЧДа, по-моему студентам на последних курсах очень неплохо, получить опыт и стаж работы по своей специальности. Практически во всех фирмах в Дубне работают студенты и они не жалуются, а очень довольны, что у них есть возможность подработать! В других регионах нету возможности студентам подработать именно по специальности, только официантками, барменами и посудомойщицами!
Если бы они прям рабски трудились как Вы говорите, они бы не работали наверное!

Сейчас дети современные, общаются с компьютером на "ты" с детства, им интересны электронные обучающие приложения или учебники!
